Information for New Members
Selection to the
National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right. It is an honor and a
responsibility. Students do not apply for membership in the National Honor
Society; instead, they provide information to be used by the WHS teacher
selection committee to support their candidacy for membership. Membership
is granted only to those students selected by the WHS teacher selection
committee. This selection committee changes each year and most departments
of teachers are represented each year. This is not an election, nor is
membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a
specified level of performance. NHS is more than an honor roll and the
extent to which the local chapter emphasizes the other components of the
selection process (leadership, service, and character) is carefully included in
the selection process.
The
WHS National Honor Society will begin the selection procedure for members as
soon as the first semester grades are finished and grade point averages are
figured by the guidance department.
As was specified above, there is a precise procedure outlined
by the National Council of National Honor Societies recorded in the handbook and
by - laws, and it is followed by the Wapakoneta High School NHS. These
requirements are followed so that the local chapter can retain national
certification.
Any junior or senior with a GPA of 3.5 or better is
eligible for nomination. As stated, students will be selected based on
four categories: Scholarship (GPA), Leadership, Good Character and Service
to school, church and/or community. Students should exhibit achievements
in all four areas. Grades alone are not a factor for membership.
The students meeting the above requirements and wishing
membership will be asked to submit a typed resume of all honors, awards,
activities and service in which they are or were involved in - in school, church
or community.
Final selection of teacher recommendation committee will be
tabulated by the advisor. The advisor only tabulates results. He
does not choose the candidates for membership in NHS.
The posting of juniors and seniors with a 3.5 or
better average will be on the library windows and in Mr. Meyer's room.
Any questions about the selection process should be directed
to Mr. Meyer, the advisor.
