English 9

 

#197 English 9  1year  1 unit
PREREQUISITE: Passage of English 8 and signed recommendation of 8th grade English teacher.
This class is designed for the student who may have experienced some difficulty in middle school language arts courses.  Students will review basic English grammar and study for mastery.  The study of vocabulary and a wide range of literature will expose students in English 9 to a rich language experience approach to learning.  An emphasis in writing good, coherent sentences and paragraphs and then expanding these skills in order to handle OGT writing prompts will be covered.  Speaking and listening skills will also be addressed.  A notebook is a requirement in this course.  Fees are assessed for an English workbook, a vocabulary workbook, and Scope Magazine.

 

#198 College Prep English 9  1 year  1 unit
PREREQUISITE: Passage of English 8 with a B average and signed recommendation of 8th grade English teacher.
This class is designed for the student who sees a college education in his/her future.  Units of study includes grammar, vocabulary, writing, and literature.  Literature includes review and instruction in the genres of: short story, biography/autobiography, poetry, nonfiction, mythology, drama and novel.  OGT skills and practice are also addressed.  A notebook is required as is a formal research assignment.  Fees are assessed for a handbook, a vocabulary workbook, and a research manual.

 

#199 Advanced English 9  1 year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: An A average in English 8 and/or the signed recommendation of 8th grade English teacher.
Advanced English 9 is for the serious language arts student who had shown talent in the curriculum and who is interested not only in more in depth information but also a faster pace.  Areas of study include higher concepts in grammar, literate of many genres with an emphasis on novels from the college bound reading lists, and the advanced study of vocabulary through the use of Vocabu-Lit, a workbook concept based on learning new words through literature.  Writing in response to literature is frequently assigned, as is a research paper.  OGT preparation is addressed.  An English notebook is required.  Fees are assessed for an English handbook, Vocabu-Lit workbook, and a research paper manual.

PREREQUISITE: Credit in English 9 and signed recommendation of pervious instructor.
This class is designed for those students who are planning to go directly in the workforce, the military, or for an associate's degree after high school.  Emphasis is placed on reading of short stories and short novels, drama, and poetry improvement of vocabulary; basic grammar and usage skills.  Writings will move from thesis sentence to paragraphs and eventually into longer essays.  A major focus of the class will be on activities leading to passage of he OGT.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

 

#202 College Prep English 10  1 year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: Credit and a B average in College Prep English 9 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
College Prep sophomore English is a class designed for those who plan on earning a four-year Bachelor's degree.  In this class, students will learn how to write a well-planned essay; read a novel for enjoyment as well as for information about the author's style and intended meaning; and study grammar skills that apply to the classroom at time to learn more than basic English skills.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

 

#204 Advanced English 10  1 year  1 unit
PREREQUISITE: Credit and a B average in Advanced English 9 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
This class is designed for those students who wish to move through the language arts curriculum at a faster pace and be involved in more in-depth discussions.  Emphasis is placed on grammar and usage mastery; reading of short stories and novels; vocabulary acquisition; longer writings, and the improvement of high level thinking skills.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

PREREQUISITE: Credit in English 10 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
This course is designed for students who are planning to enter the workforce, the military or a technical school following graduation.  In English 11 we will use thematic units to teach American Literature.  Several supplemental novels will be read.  This course will also focus on grammar and usage, expansion of vocabulary and improvement of writing skills.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

 

#303 College Prep English 11  1 year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: Credit and a B average in College Prep 10 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
This course is designed for students who are planning on attending a four-year college or university following graduation.  College preparatory English 11 will combine a review of grammar with emphasis on American literature, vocabulary and the writing of paragraphs and short compositions.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

 

#304 Speech 1  1 semester  1/2 unit
Open to juniors and seniors
Speech is designed to help students become better speakers and listeners.  After giving several short presentations, students will be required to deliver the following types of speeches: inform, persuade, and entertain.  Interviewing techniques and communication theory will be learned.  Mass communication (broadcasting), oral interpretations of literature, extemporaneous speaking, debate, and other types of communication will be learned.  Students will assist their peers in becoming better speakers and listeners.

PREREQUISITE: Credit and a B average in Advanced English 10 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
This course will combine a review of grammar with intensified work in American literature, vocabulary, and the writing of compositions.  Supplemental books will be read in addition to the text.  Fees are assessed for a workbook.

 

English 12

 

#413 English 12  1 year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: Credit in English 11 and signed recommendation of previous instructor.
This course is a practical English course designed for the following students: (1) those pursuing a tow-year associate degree; (2) those enrolling in a technical school; (3) those wishing to perfect their English skills for the job market.  This course will focus on the rudimentary skills of writing, reading, comprehension, and vocabulary development.  Students will receive intensive work in the basics of writing, such as writing short paragraphs, letters, and resumes.  Areas of concentration will include sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and the mechanics of good writing.

 

#414 CP English 12  1year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: Credit and a B average in English 11 and signed recommendation of previous instructor
This course is designed for the college-bound student who seeks in-depth study.  This focus is on British literature and will include the writing of paragraphs and several longer papers related to the readings.  Grammar/usage study will be in the form of review and in conjunction with the writing assignments.

 

#415 Advanced English 12  1year  1unit
PREREQUISITE: Advanced English 11 and signed recommendation of previous instructor 
*CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED
Course work features intensive development of reading, writing, and analytical skills needed to prepare for the AP English 12 test.  Requirements for the course include readings from Greek, British, and Western literature as mandated by the College Board.  Work will proceed at an accelerated pace.  A summer reading program is required.  Students will be accepted into the class based on previous performance, ACT/SAT scores, and teacher interview.  Unless the teacher advises otherwise, it is expected that each student will take the Advanced Placement Test (Cost is approximately $25.)
