STUDENTS IN THEIR JUNIOR OR SENIOR YEAR MAY DESIRE TO SCHEDULE MORE THAN ONE CLASS FROM THE SCIENCE PROGRAM.
| #128 Integrated Science 1 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| This class is designed for the students who need a basic background in all the fields of science, but are not necessarily college bound. This class emphasizes the materials that are included in the science proficiency test. A lab fee is assessed. | ||
| #129 Advanced Science 9 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Strongly recommended that you have
taken or are taking Algebra 1
The Advanced Science 9 course is designed for the more advanced student, who may have a greater interest in the science field. The student, in most cases, may wish to further his/her education in the field of science, taking Advanced Biology as a sophomore, Chemistry as a junior, and Physics as a senior. In Advanced Science, we study basic chemistry that includes the study of matter, elements, atoms, chemical reactions, chemical bonding, acids, bases, and salts. A brief study of nuclear energy is also included. We try to prepare the Advanced Science student for future science classes and to provide a base for a possible career in a related field. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #230 Integrated Science 2 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Integrated
Science 1
This class is designed as an extension of Integrated Science 1. The course contains elements of physical, biological, health, and earth sciences. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #231 Biology 1 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Advanced
Science 9, Integrated Science 3, or Ag Science 2
Biology is offered to those students who wish to study living things. Topics of study include cells, genetics and heredity, classification, ecology, and structure and function of a variety of organisms. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #332 Integrated Science 3 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Integrated
Science 2 or Biology 1 This class is an extension of Integrated Science 1 and 2. It provides the student with a background in the relationship of chemistry to the modern world. This class provides the students with an opportunity to take a college preparatory science class the following year. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #333 Chemistry 1 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1,
have taken or currently taking Algebra 2, and recommendation of previous
science and math instructors.
This course is intended for those students who plan to pursue a field of interest in which knowledge of chemistry is required or recommended. This course is intended for those students enrolled in the regular classes in mathematics. Students will need to have a calculator for use in this class. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #336 Physiology & Anatomy |
1 semester |
1/2 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Biology
received at least a B, Chemistry, received at least a B or approval from
anatomy teacher. This course includes the study of all the chemical and physical processes that occur in the human body. It will include a look at the cell and tissue structure of all basic organs as well as the function of each. This course will help prepare those who plan on pursuing further study in the field of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other health related occupations. A lab fee to be assessed. |
||
| #337 Environmental Science |
1 semester |
1/2 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Biology 1
and Integrated Science 3 (B or above average) or Chemistry 1
This class is designed to study areas of ecology such as major types of pollution, major biomes on earth and the organisms, which are the inhabitants, aquatic and marine ecosystems, and to explore survival techniques in nature. There will be many hands on learning activities requiring many field trips. Other areas of the environment may be studied as well. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #434 Physics |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Algebra 2
(B- or better)
Physics is a science concerned with the study of energy. Topics to be studied in this course include mechanics (vectors, motion, and forces), properties of matter, energy, heat, waves (light and sound), optics, electricity, magnetism, and electronics. Physics is strongly recommended for any student interested in pursuing a career or college education in the fields of engineering, pre-med, or any science field. It is also recommended to any student planning on attending a liberal arts college or university. A lab fee is assessed.. |
||
| #437 Advanced Placement Biology |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Biology 1
or Advanced Biology 1, Chemistry 1 (B- or better), Algebra 2, or
permission of instructor
This is a college preparatory course for students interested in a science-related major. This course emphasizes structure and function of macromolecules, DNA and RNA, the biochemistry of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and the overall theme of biodiversity and evolution. A college textbook and labs will be used. This subject is intended for those students showing a definite interest in college science work. Unless the teacher advises otherwise, it is expected that each student will take the Advanced Placement Test. (Cost of test is approximately $25). A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #531 Advanced Biology 1 |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE:
Recommendation of previous year's science instructor
Advanced Biology 1 is offered to motivate students who want to do independent study and advanced reading in Biology. This course will cover the same topics as Biology 1, but in greater detail and with more research assignments. A lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #533 Advanced Placement Chemistry |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Chemistry 1
(B- or better), Geometry, Algebra 2
This course is intended for those students who take the advanced classes in mathematics and plan to take a college course in chemistry. This course uses a theoretical approach to the study of chemistry. Students will need to have a calculator for use in this class. This course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Test in Chemistry. Unless the teacher advises otherwise, it is expected that each student will take the Advanced Placement Test. (Cost is approximately $25.) A lab manual is to be purchased, and a lab fee is assessed. |
||
| #534 Advanced Placement Physics |
1 year |
1 unit |
| PREREQUISITE: Algebra 2
(B- or better) and recommendation of previous year's science instructor
and math instructor; recommended that you have taken or are taking Trig
and Calculus A.P. Physics is designed to prepare the student for the Physics B Advanced Placement Test. Unless the teacher advises otherwise, it is expected that each student will take the Advanced Placement Test. (Cost of test is approximately $25.) Topics to be studied in this course are similar to the #434 Physics class so that Advanced Placement Physics is an alternative to Physics 434. Rigorously covered topics and hands-on lab activities are designed to exempt students from entry-level college physics courses. A lab manual is to be purchased, and a lab fee is assessed. |
